Helicopter License Cost
How much will it cost to get my helicopter pilot license?
Helicopter license cost can vary greatly depending on your training school of choice, your location, current price of fuel, how many hours you fly, etc. Regardless of where you get your training, one thing is for certain… it isn’t cheap. This is just a general guideline to introduce you to helicopter license cost. In order to get exact prices, you’ll need to contact your prospective school to see how much they charge.
Ground school can cost anywhere between $1,500 and $2,500 for classroom instruction. In addition, there are some extra training expenses that need to be taken into account. The course material, supplies, cost for written exam, flight test, and any insurance can add up to an additional $1,000 on top of your ground school tuition.
The biggest helicopter license cost comes from flight time. Flight time can cost roughly $200-$300 per hour, (possibly more or less depending on the factors mentioned above).
Obtaining a private helicopter license will cost anywhere between $12,000 and $17,000 with flight time making up the bulk of the cost. Dual instruction (flying with an instructor) usually costs a little more per hour than flying solo. You will need to fly both dual (approximately 40 hours) and solo (approximately 10 hours) in order to get your license.
For a commercial pilot license, you need to gain many more flight hours (approximately an additional 100 hours) which can add up to an additional $20,000+ on top of the private license.
Financial aid is an option for those who cannot handle the helicopter license cost out of their own pocket. Luckily, most schools allow you to pay as you go for your flight hours which makes it easier to afford.
